Brussels – Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon called for sanctions against Israeli political leaders who violate international law at the informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Thursday. This was previously advocated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell, who is expected to propose sanctions against two ministers. He did not specify names, but according to foreign news agencies, these are Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.
In response to a journalist’s question about who specifically should be sanctioned, Fajon said, “certainly those who are proven to violate international law, including those mentioned.” In the discussion, she also called for considering strengthening trade or economic sanctions against Israel, she said on the sidelines of the meeting.
According to the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, the minister also advocated continuing sanctions against the leaders of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas. At the same time, she called for an urgent humanitarian pause to allow children to be vaccinated against various diseases, especially polio.
She added that the EU must jointly put pressure on Israel to allow the departure of the sick and wounded from Gaza for appropriate treatment. At the meeting, she also explained Slovenia’s efforts to soon accept wounded children for medical rehabilitation in Slovenia. (August 29)
