Bratislava – The European Union (EU) summit in Brussels is a forum for diverse views, where respect for other opinions should be expressed. Slovakia has no business at meetings about the war in Ukraine in Paris or London. Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) stated this on social media. He described the meetings as “war consultations of war-hungry countries”.

“Although I welcomed the Brussels summit, we in government are not entirely satisfied with the proposed conclusions. I will not question the necessity of strengthening Europe’s defense capabilities, but I have serious reservations about Ukraine’s conclusions. These do not take into account the military reality at all and only confirm that an absolute majority of European Union member countries wish to continue the war in Ukraine,” Fico declared.

The strategy that Ukraine should be as strong as possible in negotiations is unrealistic, according to the Prime Minister. He believes the strategy “peace through strength” was devised only to allow the war to continue. Fico reiterated that Slovakia is for an immediate cessation of fighting and will not support Ukraine financially or militarily. According to him, the EU does not talk about ending the killing. He believes the Union does not want to help but only wants to continue its campaign against Russia. This strategy, according to him, is unsuccessful and fatal for Ukraine.

According to the Prime Minister, Slovakia is demanding that Ukraine be directly called at the end of the summit to restore gas transit through its territory to Europe. (February 28)
