Brussels – European Union member states recognized that the cessation of gas transit through Ukraine “is a problem that threatens the entire EU,” Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated on Facebook on Thursday after the conclusion of an extraordinary summit of EU member countries in Brussels, reported by TASR.
Before the summit on further support for Ukraine and the future of European defense, Fico stated that he would demand that Thursday’s summit conclusions include a formulation that calls for finding a solution to resume gas transit through Ukraine to Slovakia; otherwise, he will block the conclusions of the summit.
“The European Council calls on the European Commission, Slovakia, and Ukraine to intensify efforts to find feasible solutions to the gas transit issue, taking into account Slovakia’s concerns,” says the adopted text. The issue of gas will be addressed by the European Council at its next meeting.
“I believe that mentioning the need to, in conjunction with the European Commission, Ukraine, and Slovakia, find a solution to resume gas transit is acceptable,” Fico stated on Thursday morning at the meeting of the Slovak National Council’s Committee for European Affairs before departing for Brussels. “If the conclusions contain such a formulation, we have no reason not to support them,” he added.
