Bratislava – Slovakia supports the intention of the European Commission (EC) to continue negotiations with the USA on import tariffs until the last moment. Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) said this in a phone call with EC President Ursula von der Leyen on Monday. According to him, a trade war between the USA and the whole world will harm both sides, TASR reports.
“Today I had a phone consultation with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. The topic was the tariffs proposed by the US President Donald Trump and foot-and-mouth disease in Slovakia,” Fico said. “I informed the EC President that I intend to discuss all development alternatives with car manufacturers in Slovakia and that I will present to the EC all proposals arising from these negotiations,” added the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister also talked with the EC head about the foot-and-mouth disease epidemic in Slovakia and possible consequences for the Central European region.
“We agreed to jointly seek ways to compensate for the losses. I thanked for the participation of EU experts on our territory, who confirmed that the Slovak Republic is addressing the infection professionally and in accordance with European legislation,” added the Prime Minister. (31- March)
