Bratislava – On April 2nd, U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to impose tariffs on imports of all goods and services from around the world. In the European Union (EU), the tariffs will most affect the automotive industry in Slovakia. Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) said this on Monday after an extraordinary meeting of the government, reports TASR.

“The tariffs will have three dimensions. The first dimension is that all member states of the European Union will be burdened with new tariffs on all goods and services, then there will be a second level, which concerns various standards that can to some extent complicate the export of products from Europe to the United States,” Fico said, adding that for Slovakia, the U.S. customs policy will be important, especially when it comes to cars, the pharmaceutical industry, and semiconductors.

According to him, the introduction of high tariffs will most affect the automotive industry in Slovakia and the companies Volkswagen and Jaguar Land Rover, and these companies will have to prepare for completely new conditions.

“In a short time, there will be a meeting with the manufacturers of these cars, we will listen very carefully to what measures they would suggest, and we will offer them in a professional manner to the European Commission for the European Union to negotiate and react together,” Fico described the situation.
