Judicial Reform in Albania is working, according to the stance of the European Union Ambassador in Tirana, Silvio Gonzato.

In a meeting organized by the EU, Gonzato emphasized that the Special Anti-Corruption and Organized Crime Prosecutor’s Office (SPAK) should be allowed to do its job.

“We do not speak about ongoing investigations, but I can say that what is happening is what we expected. And naturally, the 2016 judicial reform is working,” he said.

“We need to allow SPAK to do its job, to create the space for it to do so. At the same time, I can say that maybe that reform is ensuring that the judicial system is independent, independent from political influence. The problem that we all know is Albania’s main obstacle on its path to the EU is corruption,” Gonzato said.

“I believe and hope that SPAK will do its job,” said Ambassador Gonzato.

Gonzato was present at an “EU4Municipalities” event.

This project is accompanied by over 2.5 million euros invested in 19 municipalities and has helped improve local services, benefiting around 50,000 citizens.

The new phase of the project will have a quadrupled budget of 10 million euros, aiming to promote sustainable development and improve the quality of life for all Albanian citizens. / (July 12)
