The European Union Ambassador to Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, visited the Constitutional Court of Albania, as he expressed, as a sign of EU support for independent justice institutions.
Gonzato met with the Constitutional Court body, while sharing moments from their discussions on social networks.
“Not only is the Court the guarantor of the Constitution and the highest instance in the country to protect individual constitutional rights; it also has an important role to play during the negotiations and in fulfilling the requirements of chapter 23, which is key for Albania’s membership,” emphasized the EU ambassador to Tirana, Silvio Gonzato.
The Justice Reform in Albania also affected the Constitutional Court, which was fully operational only in January 2023, when its ninth member and the institution’s chairperson were appointed.
The Constitutional Court did not function for more than two years because five of its members did not pass the vetting filter, while three others resigned, escaping the reevaluation process.
After the vacancies created by the vetting process, the Constitutional Court resumed its work in December 2020, after completing the quorum with 7 members.
The Constitutional Court consists of 9 members. Three members are appointed by the President of the Republic, three members are elected by the Assembly, and three members are elected by the High Court. The judges of the Constitutional Court serve for 9 years, without the right to reappointment. (March 7)
