BRUSSELS (ANP) – In a trade war, both parties lose, said Hoekstra. “It is ultimately lose-lose.”
Hoekstra does not want to anticipate possible measures. According to him, that is not wise. He emphasized that it is unwise “to go down this path,” referring to a trade war. “But if that happens, it leaves us no choice.” Then Europe will take countermeasures with “at least equal currency.”
Hoekstra added that the European Commission will always continue to seek dialogue with the US.
The American president Donald Trump recently announced plans to impose trade tariffs on the EU on aluminum and steel. He also threatens to impose global reciprocal tariffs. These are levies against countries that also have import tariffs on American products.
