It is necessary to establish the European Mutual Aid Fund, from which farmers affected by the climate crisis will be compensated, emphasized the Minister of Rural Development and Food, Kostas Tsiaras, upon his arrival at the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council.
“It is an issue we have worked methodically on together with my Cypriot counterpart and ministers of the Mediterranean countries,” he stated.
As he added, until this proposal is adopted, the Greek government will continue to support farmers, utilizing available financial resources from the European Union, as well as through the capabilities provided by national fiscal policy.
It is noted that the establishment of the European Mutual Aid Fund has been undertaken at the Med9 level, the 9 Mediterranean European countries, aiming to ensure the necessary resources to address the consequences of the climate crisis and to easily and quickly transfer these specific European resources to the people in the primary sector who will face emergency disasters.
At the same time, the Minister of Rural Development and Food emphasized the need for critical issues that will concern today’s meeting. Among the main priorities are zoonoses, the management of fishery stocks in the Western Mediterranean, and regulations for the trade of agricultural products.
Speaking of zoonoses, Mr. Tsiaras noted that they “now concern not only Greece, but the whole of Europe. The management of fishery stocks in the Western Mediterranean is an important issue, as well as the regulations concerning the trade of agricultural products.” (01/27/2025)
