For the first time, Sweden is participating in the NATO summit in Washington as an official member. How and to what extent support for Ukraine should be designed is one of the main issues during the three days.
Another issue is how NATO should handle member countries that currently do not meet the two percent goal, that is, spending at least two percent of the country’s GDP on defense.
Around Europe, more and more countries are now investing more in defense.
Significantly more may be required, however, assesses Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in connection with the NATO summit.
There have been discussions about an increase of up to three percent. Kristersson does not want to specify a specific figure.
“I don’t have a number. Now, as a new NATO member, we will fully live up to the floor that exists and encourage other countries to do the same.”
“The most important thing we can do from European NATO countries is to ensure that Europe is equipped and prove to the USA that we are taking our responsibility. We do not leave it to American taxpayers to finance Europe’s defense.”
