São Paulo – Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Hadja Lahbib will have to leave the economic mission in Brazil, which begins on Sunday, earlier than expected. She is expected Wednesday at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, as confirmed by the federal public service of Foreign Affairs.
The European Parliament will vote Wednesday in Strasbourg in plenary session on the approval of the entire new European Commission. Lahbib will become European Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management and for Equality, and she may receive additional responsibilities. The new leadership team of President Ursula von der Leyen could then start on December 1.
Lahbib will leave Brazil on Monday. So she will only be able to experience part of the economic mission led by Princess Astrid, which takes place from Sunday to Friday in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. She will still be present on Sunday when the princess kicks off the mission with a visit to the site of the Brussels-based chemical company Solvay near the city of São Paulo.
The political representation during the mission will, after Lahbib’s departure, still consist of Flemish Prime Minister Matthias Diependaele, Brussels Prime Minister Rudi Vervoort, and Walloon Deputy Prime Minister Pierre-Yves Jeholet. However, the latter will leave after the São Paulo segment.
