SOFIA – Government leaders and leading politicians in Bulgaria expressed the opinion that the country should not send peacekeepers to Ukraine.
The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Rumen Radev stated that he is categorically against Bulgaria sending soldiers to Ukraine in any form. From the beginning of the war in Ukraine, I have raised the issue of not allowing Bulgaria to be involved in it. Today, against the backdrop of the collapsing global security architecture, this issue is even more relevant, President Radev said. He expressed his expectation that the government and the National Assembly will declare a clear and unequivocal position that Bulgaria will not send troops to Ukraine.
The government will not propose that Bulgarian armed forces be sent abroad, said Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov. This is the authority of the parliament, he pointed out, referring to the country’s Constitution. We will support Ukraine in the ways we have done so far, but a Bulgarian soldier will not fight on foreign territory and will not participate in missions, stated Prime Minister Zhelyazkov.
A Bulgarian soldier will not go to Ukraine, said the leader of the largest political force in the Bulgarian parliament GERB Boyko Borisov.
We will continue to support Ukraine in its recovery and participate actively in all forms that contribute to peace, added Borisov.
From the party “There Is Such a People”, which is part of the country’s government, they stated that they will propose that the parliament adopt a decision not to send Bulgarian citizens to the front in Ukraine.
Today, the Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov will join an emergency meeting for Ukraine, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, via video conference.
Tomorrow, the Bulgarian parliament will listen to the Ministers of Defense and Foreign Affairs on a questionnaire prepared by the US regarding Bulgaria’s readiness to participate in a special military operation on the territory of Ukraine. (February 18-19)
