BRUSSELS – Slovak MEP Lucia Yar (Progressive Slovakia, Renew Europe) was elected Deputy Chair of the European Parliament’s Budget Committee (BUDG) in Brussels on Tuesday, reports TASR.
Lucia Yar received 28 out of 39 votes, with 21 needed. Her election to this position follows her election on Monday as coordinator of the committee for the Renew Europe faction. “With the accumulation of these two positions in this influential committee, I will have a direct and significant impact on shaping policies and positions on the European budget. Just for better imagination, for this year the EU budget commitments are at the level of 190 billion euros and revenues exceed 142 billion euros. Therefore, I feel a great responsibility,” Yar told TASR. She added that she wants to push for more direct money into regions, better security for Europe and Slovakia, and support for women.
The BUDG committee’s agenda also includes the recovery plan and the Eurofunds conditionality mechanism, which are key for Slovakia. “Naturally, my partners will be the European Commissioners, the presiding country in the EU Council, member states, and all other Union institutions that are equally involved in the EU budget. I am looking forward to this work,” Yar said. A total of 40 MEPs serve on the committee. The composition and number of members were decided by European lawmakers during the constitutive session in Strasbourg last week. BUDG is one of the 20 standing committees of the EP and is responsible for issues related to the EU budget and the multiannual financial framework.
