Brussels – The administration of American President Donald Trump does not seem interested in averting a trade conflict with the European Union (EU), Slovak EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič said on Monday. TASR reports this based on an agency Reuters report.
The Trump administration does not seem to be engaging in talks to avert a trade conflict with the EU, Šefčovič told reporters in Brussels on Monday. The US is set to impose tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports in two days.
Šefčovič traveled to Washington in February to initiate a dialogue to avoid “unnecessary pain from measures and countermeasures.” Both sides, according to him, identified several areas that could be mutually beneficial.
“However, one hand cannot clap. It seems the American administration is not engaging to reach an agreement,” Šefčovič said. The EU, he said, is ready for constructive discussion. A trade war and mutual tariffs bring no advantage to anyone. Partners with a mutual trade value of 1.6 trillion euros should be “extremely cautious.”
“I think we have stated our position very clearly, and I know this is the minimum expected of us.” (10th March)
