Paris – Emmanuel Macron has formally proposed to the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen to reappoint Thierry Breton as commissioner on behalf of France, praising in a letter his “competence,” “experience,” and “European commitment.”
In this letter to the president re-elected by the European Parliament, dated July 25 and made public, the French head of state believes that Thierry Breton can, “through his qualities,” “continue to independently ensure the important responsibilities” that will be entrusted to him.
Ursula von der Leyen has asked member states to propose candidates for the commission by August 30.
Thierry Breton has held the position of Commissioner for the Internal Market since 2019, a vast portfolio that includes digital and industry. He has established himself as a prominent figure in the Commission by tackling the abuses of power by tech giants.
But he may be called upon to change posts in the future commission. (30/07/2024)
