Strasbourg – Slovak MEP Martin Hojsík from the Renew Europe (RE) faction was elected on Tuesday (July 16) in Strasbourg by members of the European Parliament (EP) as one of the 14 vice-presidents of the European legislative body. This is reported by a special reporter of TASR.
Hojsík received 393 votes from MEPs, while he needed only 333 to be elected. In the first round, a total of 11 vice-presidents were elected, with Sabine Verheyen from the European People’s Party (EPP) receiving the most votes (604). A second round of voting will follow, with the remaining three positions to be filled.
“It is a secret vote and nothing is certain in it. So I definitely did not expect to be elected in the first round as a matter of course. I greatly appreciate the trust from my colleagues. The result shows that as Progressive Slovakia, we are clearly anchored at the center of what is happening in Europe. We are helping to shape the future of Europe and Slovakia and are not sitting somewhere in a corner,” Hojsík said for TASR immediately after the announcement of the results.
Hojsík was also a vice-president of the EP in the previous term from 2023, when he replaced Michal Šimečka in this position. Hojsík will be part of the EP presidency, which consists of the chairman, 14 vice-presidents, and four quaestors. The term of office of the presidency members is two and a half years.
In the previous term, Hojsík also served in the committees for the environment, public health and food safety (ENVI), and for women’s rights and gender equality (FEMM). In the June European elections, he received 89,084 preferential votes, which was approximately 61,000 more than in 2019.
The presidency is responsible for the smooth functioning of the EP. For example, it drafts the preliminary budget of the parliament and decides on the administrative, personnel, and organizational matters of the EP.
