The Turkish occupation must end emphasized the foreign minister of Cyprus, Konstantinos Kombos, at the inauguration of the photo exhibition “50 years of Turkish invasion and occupation” at the Permanent Representation of Cyprus in Brussels.
As Konstantinos Kombos mentioned, the goal remains the reunification of Cyprus and “we are ready to engage in substantive negotiations aimed at finding a sustainable and lasting solution. Always and exclusively on the basis of a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality as defined by the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and with full respect for the principles and values of the European Union. This is the only way. This is the only acceptable way” as he emphasized.
The Cypriot foreign minister pointed out that “five decades of continued occupation of one-third of our country, European territory, have passed. This is not just a moment in our history. This is, unfortunately, our daily reality. You have a duty not to forget. The photo exhibition, which I have the honor of inaugurating today, serves exactly this purpose. It will travel around the world through our network of diplomatic missions. Brussels is one of the most important stops”.
Mr. Kombos noted that some of the photographs are being published for the first time and constitute the mosaic of the collective memory of the destruction and pain of the Cypriot people, adding that “they also serve as a reminder of Turkish barbarity and aggression and are dominated by the faces of the summer of 1974”.
