Brussels – As a member of NATO, we must be a responsible country, especially in a period of truly complex geopolitical context on the continent on which we live, said today from Brussels the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Timcho Mucunski after meeting with the Secretary General of the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg at the headquarters of the Pact.
– It is not a question of whether we should, but we must continue such investments. It is in the interest of the Alliance of which we are a member, but we believe that it is also in our national interest, said Mucunski, confirming the country’s commitment to fulfilling the obligation to allocate funds to the defense budget at a level of at least two percent of the national GDP.
Mucunski expressed satisfaction with the meeting with Stoltenberg, which he described as positive and cordial, reaffirming the commitments of the new Government, led by Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, related to our NATO membership, including support for the policy of defense and deterrence and continuous support for Ukraine.
The Head of Diplomacy added that he and Stoltenberg discussed the upcoming NATO summit in Washington, where the 75th anniversary of the Alliance’s formation will be marked, and where Prime Minister Mickoski will be the head of our delegation.
– We plan active participation where key decisions related to the future of the Alliance will be made and we will certainly be an active participant in contributing to those future policies, added Mucunski.
He emphasized that in addition to the country’s 100-percent compliance with the EU’s common foreign and security policy, it is equally important what it is doing as a small state as a NATO member.
– The protection of the order of international public law is very significant. What is happening in Ukraine from that point of view, but also from a security point of view, must never be allowed to happen again. Our political and security efforts will continue in the direction of supporting Ukraine and putting an end to that tragic military conflict as soon as possible, Mucunski concluded.
Mucunski will continue his two-day working visit to Brussels with meetings with representatives of the European Union. (June 25)
