Albania has 2.4 million inhabitants according to results published in Tirana by the Institute of Statistics.
The census estimated that in the Albanian territory in 2023 there were 755,950 families, with an average size of 3.2 members per family, living in 1,082,529 ordinary dwellings.
The Director of INSTAT, Elsa Dhuli, pointed out that the completion of the Census fulfilled one of the conditions for the opening of negotiations with the EU and that the results will be used to provide necessary statistics, as part of the European Statistical System in the future.
The 2023 Census brought many innovations such as the use of information technology in data collection, a digitized geospatial system, real-time monitoring of data collection progress and quality, and a broader range of information collected.
The methodology, definitions, and concepts were based on the recommendations of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) for the 2020 census round, and EU regulations.
The head of the European Union delegation in Tirana, Ambassador Silvio Gonzato, present at the publication of the census results, emphasized that the Census provides data on which policies are built and public services are offered.
“The Census is also important in the context of the EU integration negotiations. Accurate and reliable information is simply essential,” Gonzato said.
The European Union was a partner of INSTAT in this process./ (July 1)
