Kyiv – The new European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos visited Kyiv on Sunday, the first day of her five-year mandate, together with the new President of the European Council Antonio Costa and the new High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas. She promised support to the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several members of the government in bringing the country closer to the union.
“I promise to do everything in my power to bring you to the finish line of the negotiation process,” Kos said at the start of the meeting of high-level EU and Ukraine representatives.
She stated that Ukraine has already made considerable progress in implementing reforms. At the same time, she emphasized that the process of rapprochement is difficult and based on the achievements of the candidate country, but they can count on Brussels’ support. “I am essentially part of your team,” Kos said.
Kos separately met with the Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanishyna. “We agreed to maintain a close and regular dialogue to support an effective association process. Ukraine is strong and united in its commitment to the changes necessary for EU membership,” Stefanishyna wrote on social network X.
Ukraine, which has been facing Russian aggression since February 2022, began accession negotiations with the EU in June this year and is now awaiting the start of the substantive phase of negotiations. This begins with the opening of the first set of chapters related to the rule of law. In the framework that forms the basis for negotiations, the EU legal order is divided into 33 chapters grouped into six clusters.
The President of the European Council Antonio Costa stated on Sunday that Kyiv and Brussels will strive to open at least two clusters in the first half of 2025. (December 1)
