Brussels – Only 40 percent of surface water in the EU is in good condition, warns Jessika Roswall in her first major report as EU Environment Commissioner.
“Our water is polluted, our water supply is threatened, and we are not doing enough to prevent floods,” says Sweden’s former EU Minister Roswall as she presents the report on the water situation in the 27 EU countries.
“For too long we have viewed water as an infinite resource. We need to change that,” says Roswall, warning, for example, that 74 percent of Spain’s area is at risk of desertification.
The report is intended to pave the way for a water resilience strategy in the EU, which Roswall will present later this year.
