Brussels – New EU rules to counter deforestation – the so-called deforestation directive – will come into effect only from the end of December 2025.
The EU Parliament has approved the postponement that the EU Commission wanted to give companies and member states more time to adapt to the new rules.
The rules impose stricter requirements on importers of, among other things, coffee, wood products, and other goods that must be able to certify that the products have not been grown on land that was previously rainforest.
The vote took place last week, with 546 votes to 97.
