BRUSSELS One in three women (31%) aged 18 to 74 have suffered physical or sexual violence in the European Union (EU), with Portugal showing the third lowest complaint rate (19.7%), according to Eurostat today.
According to the survey on gender-based violence, around 50 million women in the EU report having already experienced physical (including threats) or sexual violence in adulthood, with Finland at the top of the table (57.1%), followed by Sweden (52.5%) and Hungary (49.1%).
At the opposite end are Bulgaria (11.9%), Poland (16.7%), Portugal and the Czech Republic (19.7% each), with the lowest rates of respondents reporting having already suffered from physical or sexual violence.
On the European average, younger women (ages 18 to 29 and 30 to 44) are the most likely to say they suffer from violence (35%), followed by those aged 45 to 64 (31.2%) and those aged 65 to 74 (24.2%).
In Portugal, the highest percentage was observed among women aged 30 to 44 (24%), followed by those aged 18 to 29 (22.4%), 45 to 64 (22.6%), and women aged 65 to 74 (14.5%).
The joint survey by the European statistics service (Eurostat), the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, and the European Institute for Gender Equality was published today in the context of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, marked today. (25/11/24)
