Bratislava – Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) did not win anything for Slovakia’s energy security at the extraordinary EU summit. Representatives of the opposition parties PS, SaS and Za ľudí stated this on Friday, as reported by TASR.
The leader of the opposition PS Michal Šimečka and PS board member Ivan Korčok stated at a press conference on Friday that Fico won nothing for his country’s energy security in Brussels. They claim this is a consequence of Slovakia’s isolation on the European scene.
“What Robert Fico is trying to sell as a victory is actually just a pathetic show for the citizens, meant to create the illusion of a determined fighter in Brussels. In reality, the summit’s outcome is a terrible embarrassment because the prime minister allowed 26 colleagues to give him a homework assignment on paper to finally act,” said Korčok.
Together with Šimečka, they noted that this is due to Slovakia’s isolation in foreign policy. “EU leaders simply do not want to back a prime minister who has left the European table for the other side to the Russians, thus pulling Slovakia away from the EU,” noted Korčok. PS also criticized other steps of the government in foreign policy.
Members of the National Council (NR) SR for SaS also emphasized at a press conference on Friday that the prime minister essentially negotiated nothing at the EU summit regarding gas transit and warned that Slovakia is becoming unreliable for its closest allies.
“These days, history is being written in Brussels. Decisions are being made on how Europe’s security will look like, how to help Ukraine avert Russian aggression, to keep the war as far as possible from the Schengen border. And what is Fico doing in this historic time? Well, he is feeding his voters populist lies. He pretends he is negotiating the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, and in the end, he only negotiates that they should continue to politely talk with Ukraine and not disturb the real leaders in their efforts to defend Europe,” stated NR SR MP Vladimíra Marcinková (SaS).
The chairwoman of the Za ľudí party, Veronika Remišová, also stated that the prime minister essentially achieved nothing at the summit.
“Except for one sentence, that he himself must make a greater effort on the issue of gas transit. This homework assignment can be agreed upon, citizens are asking why he is whining in public appearances instead of achieving something for Slovakia,” she added.
An extraordinary EU summit on support for Ukraine and European defense took place in Brussels on Thursday (March 6). A text was included in the conclusions that a solution to restore gas transit through Ukraine should be sought with the cooperation of the European Commission, Ukraine, and Slovakia. After the summit, Fico stated that EU member states recognized that the cancellation of gas transit through Ukraine “is a problem that threatens the entire EU”. (March 7)
