Paris – French Prime Minister Michel Barnier called on Tuesday for the implementation “without delay” of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum adopted last May, intended to strengthen the fight against illegal immigration in the European Union.
Migration and integration policies are no longer controlled “in a satisfactory manner,” he said on Tuesday during his general policy declaration, announcing their tightening.
In particular, he plans to implement a “more efficient processing” of asylum requests or to facilitate “the exceptional extension of the detention of foreigners in an irregular situation, to better enforce the obligations to leave French territory (OQTF).” He does not rule out reducing visas for countries reluctant to take back their nationals.
“France will continue, he warned, for as long as necessary, to restore controls at its own borders,” as provided by certain derogations to European regulations and as Germany just did in mid-September. (1st October 2024)
