SUBOTICA – President of the Association of Vojvodina Hungarians (SVM) Balint Pastor said that it is important for Serbia to continue having a representative in the European Parliament (EP) and that the Fides – KDNP Coalition achieved a good result in the European Union elections because out of the 21 mandates allocated to Hungary, they won 11, representing the majority of the mandates.
Pastor emphasized that the Fides-KDNP coalition has never received as many votes in the European Parliament elections as they did now, and that one of the 11 mandates belongs to the Vojvodina Hungarians. “With Anamarija Viček, the Association of Vojvodina Hungarians and the Vojvodina Hungarian community once again have a European Parliament member on the Fides-KDNP list. We are pleased that the Vojvodina Hungarians voting by mail significantly contributed to this success,” said Pastor. Evaluating the overall European elections, he noted a slight shift to the right in the results. Pastor also commented on how this might affect our country’s position and said he doesn’t think there will be significant changes. “I don’t expect great miracles in terms of Brussels’ attitude toward Serbia, but we see that in some European countries the right has strengthened, which could lead to states treating their sovereignty differently than the European Parliament and some of its bodies have done previously. This could mean that Brussels might also view Serbia’s accession process differently,” said Pastor, assessing the European Parliament election results.
Pastor said that in recent years the European Parliament has been characterized by the fact that due to attacks from liberal forces, the efforts of the Serbian Government have not been truly valued, and he emphasized that this is very unfair, as it is known that the European Union has numerous members from this region who were not even close to being prepared at the time of their accession, as Serbia is at this moment. “Still, Serbia is very far from joining the EU. Therefore, it is important that we will have Anamarija Viček as a representative. One swallow does not make a summer, but it is important that on every issue, she can state what the reality is in Serbia,” Pastor stressed. He said that the now-elected European Parliament member Anamarija Viček will have a triple task because besides Hungary and the Vojvodina Hungarians, she will also represent Serbia, despite Serbia not being an EU member. “Therefore, cooperation with the Serbian Government must be established – which will not be difficult since she was also a state secretary – with Serbia’s mission in Brussels, and I am confident that she will be able to contribute to speeding up Serbia’s EU accession process,” Pastor said.
