STRASBOURG – Croatian MEP Tonino Picula has been appointed as the permanent rapporteur of the European Parliament for Serbia, his office announced on Tuesday.

This is a position in which Picula, on behalf of the European Parliament, will cover all topics concerning the relations between the European Union and Serbia during this mandate.

“In light of the extensive experience I have gained and my understanding of the situation in the Western Balkans as well as the EU enlargement policy, I see this appointment as recognition for my work so far,” Picula said.

“As always, I welcome and support the fact that the enlargement policy is once again in the focus of the EU. There is evidently greater political support than before, but the accession process must still be based on meeting the criteria. Each country should be assessed individually according to its results,” emphasizes Tonino Picula.

In previous mandates, Picula was the head of the Working Group for the Western Balkans, the rapporteur for the USA and Montenegro, the EP rapporteur for the new enlargement strategy, and the EP co-rapporteur for the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance IPA III and the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans.
