Bratislava – In an unstable and little predictable world with changing geopolitical reality, Slovakia and its ambassadors face the challenge of contributing to the stability of the international environment while also promoting the national interests of the country. President Peter Pellegrini stated this on Tuesday on the occasion of appointing the heads of diplomatic missions. He emphasized the indisputable anchoring of Slovakia in the European Union (EU) and NATO, but also the need to seek and develop relationships with other partners, informs TASR.
He handed over the credentials to Olga Algayerova, who will take the position of head of the permanent mission of Slovakia to the Council of Europe (CoE), the new ambassador to the Czech Republic Martin Muranský, also to Peter Susko, who became the new ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and to Milan Cigáň, who will lead the diplomatic mission in Mexico and promote Slovakia’s interests in the United Mexican States, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Belize, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama.
Pellegrini warned diplomats that while the EU and NATO remain the priority security and economic environment for Slovakia, the country also needs other partners.
“We need to build relationships based on mutual respect in terms of sovereign foreign policy in all four cardinal directions,” added the head of state.
Pellegrini appreciated the experience of all newly appointed diplomats. He believes it will help them manage the challenges they will face in their positions. He also mentioned current issues and areas that need maximum attention. In the case of the permanent representative of Slovakia to the Council of Europe, he emphasized promoting the improvement of human rights protection mechanisms as one of the main tasks. In the agenda of the new ambassador to the Czech Republic, he pointed out the change that the Czech-Slovak relations are currently going through concerning the different stance on the war in Ukraine. He wished the new ambassador to the United Kingdom success in finding consensus across a wide range of issues that connect British-Slovak relations. He also highlighted the importance of the United Kingdom as one of the strongest global players in the field of security and economy. (March 18)
