Bratislava – The crucial question will be what role, if any, the European Union (EU) will play in the process of establishing peace in Ukraine. This was stated by the President of the Slovak Republic Peter Pellegrini, before he left for Munich on Friday morning, where he will participate in the 61st Munich Security Conference. The office of the president informed TASR about this.
The forum’s program will be devoted to global security challenges. In the coming days, Munich, also in light of current events in Ukraine, will become a place for diplomatic initiatives aimed at solving the most pressing global security problems.
According to the presidential office, world leaders will discuss transatlantic relations, the international order, and regional conflicts.
“Multilateral politics has changed into the promotion of the hard national interests of great powers in the sense of take it or leave it. The EU faces the urgent question of how to approach Ukraine, under what conditions peace will be agreed upon, and I also want to become more familiar with what the American policy’s perspective on Europe is in terms of security and economic cooperation,” noted the President of the Slovak Republic.
He added that, according to public information, the conference is expected to see the participation of the team of US Vice President J. D. Vance and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Therefore, he hopes to learn more about their ideas for ending the war in Ukraine.
The office clarified that the working program of the President of the Slovak Republic in Munich will include several bilateral meetings – with the President of the European Council António Costa, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset. However, the conference also provides an opportunity for meetings with various actors from the private sector, including companies like Google, Meta, Airbus, and Boston Consulting Group.
