SOFIA – President Rumen Radev has scheduled early parliamentary elections in Bulgaria for October 27, 2024. The upcoming early vote will be the sixth since the regular parliamentary elections on April 4, 2021. The last early elections were on June 9 of this year.
With another decree, the head of state Rumen Radev appointed a caretaker government with Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev.
At an extraordinary session of the National Assembly, the ministers in Glavchev’s caretaker cabinet took the oath. There are three changes in the government compared to the previous composition.
Ivan Kondov has been appointed as the caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs. He held the position of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in the first caretaker cabinet of Dimitar Glavchev. For a short period in 2023, Kondov was Foreign Minister in the second caretaker government of Gulub Donev, appointed by Rumen Radev.
There is also a change in the leadership of the Ministry of Internal Affairs – Atanas Ilkov has been appointed as the minister. Until now, he was the director of the Main Directorate “National Police” in the Ministry of Internal Affairs (GDBOP). He has been working in the ministry since 1987.
Krasimira Stoyanova has been appointed as the caretaker Minister of Transport and Communications. She has extensive experience in the ministry. She has been the head of the political cabinets of five regular and caretaker ministers. Until now, Stoyanova was the director of a department in the ministry.
Along with the primary task of fighting purchased and controlled votes, your government will have to make significant efforts to solve the problems of people during a difficult period, to ensure the normal functioning of the state, and to deepen our European integration, said President Radev after Glavchev presented the composition of the caretaker cabinet. By the end of the week, your government must nominate the Bulgarian candidate for the European Commissioner, the head of state also noted.
The cabinet will work to preserve Bulgaria’s European path, including joining Schengen, the eurozone, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, said Dimitar Glavchev. Solving the current problems of Bulgarian citizens is priority number one. The others are implied. Despite being a caretaker government, the state cannot remain on pause, said the caretaker prime minister. (26.08 – 27.08.2024)
