Ljubljana – At the Ljubljana railway station, construction work for its upgrade was officially started with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. As emphasized by the Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob, the significance of the project goes beyond the borders of Slovenia, as the area is part of the most important European railway network. The renovation will be co-financed from European funds.

“This project is not only important for Ljubljana, not only for passenger traffic, not only for Slovenia, but it is all of that and much more. This is the place where the most important European railway corridors intersect,” emphasized the Prime Minister. With the successful completion of the project, Slovenia will, according to him, become such a synonym for success on the European railway map as it already is in other areas.

The Minister of Infrastructure Alenka Bratušek also emphasized that the Ljubljana railway station is an important core hub in the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

For the implementation of the project, Slovenia has obtained more than 180 million euros of European funds from the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), which, according to her, is confirmation from Europe that it is indeed a large, important, and necessary project.

The head of the European Commission Representation in Slovenia Jerneja Jug Jerše reminded that this is the largest project co-financed by the RRF in Slovenia.

The renovation of the Ljubljana railway station includes upgrading the tracks with optimization of the track layout and constructing six new platforms in the station area. To ensure a safe and easier access for passengers to the platform infrastructure, a new overpass with a station hall with elevators will be built, and the existing underpass will also be renovated.

The works are expected to last 22 months, and the contract is worth 199.9 million euros without tax, or 243.9 million euros including value-added tax. (October 19)
