Bucharest – The Prime Minister of Romania, Marcel Ciolacu, announced on Thursday that the nomination for the European Commissioner position from Romania will be made after the negotiations on the distribution of portfolios within the new Community Executive are concluded.
“It’s a negotiation process. I am not negotiating with the President of the Commission on deficit issues in the context of nominating the European Commissioner. At this moment, naturally, I am talking with other political leaders, trying to negotiate the best and most representative portfolio for Romania. There are several proposals. The President of the Commission does not do this only with Romania, she does this with all the prime ministers in the European Union, and it is a longer process that we will conclude at some point,” explained Ciolacu on Thursday, when asked by journalists when Romania will make the nomination for the position of European Commissioner and what the proposal from our country will be.
Marcel Ciolacu did not exclude the option of nominating a woman: “This is possible, the President of the Commission has requested this from the beginning, we will have negotiations. If for a certain portfolio the most suitable person is a woman, then we will nominate a woman; if for a certain portfolio the most suitable person is a man, we will nominate a man. This is what I am trying to explain, it matters a lot the field that will be represented by Romania’s commissioner within the European Commission.” (29.08.2024)
