Madrid – The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, will ask the European Commission to bring forward the implementation of the Migration and Asylum Pact so that the tools it provides start being used in the summer of 2025 and not in 2026.
“We are going to ask the European Commission to advance the implementation of the Migration and Asylum Pact that we promoted under our presidency last year, so that the tools provided by this migration pact in terms of border control and the distribution of migrants start being used in the summer of 2025 and not in the summer of 2026 as planned,” assured Sánchez in the Congress of Deputies.
In his appearance in the Lower House to report on the migration crisis, the Spanish Prime Minister announced that he will count on NGOs and civil associations working on the front line “to refine and implement these mechanisms,” since “they know the reality on the ground better than anyone else.”
On the other hand, he announced the launch of a national integration and intercultural coexistence plan that will “have resources and measures to promote the integration of Spaniards.”
Furthermore, he called for the management of peaks of irregular migration that occur “according to national and international circumstances,” as well as integration. Additionally, he insisted on “respecting the diversity” of those who settle in Spain and addressing “disinformation.”
He also reminded in his speech that Spain is “a country of migrants” and urged to understand that the duty “is to be a welcoming, tolerant, and supportive society,” a “moral debt” to the elders. (October 9)
