On Thursday, December 5, a group of 9 French-speaking journalists from 4 countries in sub-Saharan Africa visited the European Newsroom (enr) at its offices at Belga News Agency in Brussels.
The visit brought together journalists and media professionals from Cameroon, Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Chad from various media organisations in the written press, radio and television.
How does the European Newsroom (enr) operate with its 23 participating news agencies from countries in the European Union, as well as EU candidates? What innovative media formats drive its daily output? These questions and more took center stage during the visit, sparking a dynamic exchange between journalists and enr representatives.
Victoria Becker and Tim Kohnen from the enr shared insights into its mission of fostering collaboration among Europe’s news agencies. From producing weekly Key Stories to organising joint interviews and workshops, the enr exemplifies how teamwork can strengthen the flow of reliable and diverse journalism across the continent.
The visiting journalists brought their own perspectives to the table as well, sharing experiences of journalistic practices in their home countries. This cross-cultural dialogue not only deepened mutual understanding but also inspired discussions on how journalists from Europe and Africa might collaborate in the future.
The visit, organised by the European External Action Service (EEAS), highlighted its commitment to building bridges with continents, regions and countries outside of the European Union. As the EU’s diplomatic service, the EEAS strives to provide firsthand exposure to the inner workings of the Union, fostering informed conversations and stronger international ties.
