Brussels – Economic security linked to trade policy directly follows what I have been dealing with so far in the European Commission (EC). Slovak Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič said this to TASR’s Brussels correspondent on Tuesday.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the composition of the new EU executive on Tuesday morning in Strasbourg and assigned the portfolio for trade and economic security to the Slovak Commissioner. He will also be responsible for interinstitutional relations and transparency.
Šefčovič emphasized for TASR that Slovakia’s priority was a strong economic portfolio and specified that trade is an exclusive EU competence and one of the most influential portfolios in the European Commission.
“I appreciate the trust of the President of the European Commission, who decided to entrust me with a portfolio with strong weight for the EU’s competitiveness, including Slovakia, as well as the overall position of the Union on the international stage. Economic security linked to trade policy directly follows what I have been dealing with so far, and where I see enormous added value given the strong global competition,” Šefčovič explained.
According to him, the EU needs partnerships, but also fair international trade with fair practices that will strengthen opportunities for European business.
“At the same time, I appreciate the President’s trust in the area of interinstitutional relations, because I remain her right-hand man in relations with the European Parliament and the EU Council, that is, the member states,” Šefčovič concluded.
