Bratislava/Uzhhorod – Ukraine will not continue the transit agreement on gas with Russia after it expires. This was emphasized on Monday after the meeting of the Slovak and Ukrainian governments in Uzhhorod by Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, reports TASR.
“The strategic goal is to impose sanctions on Russian infrastructure and deprive the Kremlin of resources from which it finances the war. Therefore, we call on all countries to fully disconnect from Russian gas. We understand the urgency of this issue in some countries, but we are counting on a gradual diversification of supplies. We have agreed to create an Eastern European energy hub,” said Shmyhal, who explained that Ukraine’s strategic aim is to deprive Russia of profits from the sale of raw materials to the EU.
The contract for the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine expires at the end of the year
Shmyhal stressed that Ukraine is grateful to Slovakia for its energy support. “I particularly want to emphasize that Slovakia is the second country in terms of emergency and commercial electricity supply volumes. Ukraine and Slovakia are implementing an ambitious project at the Mukachevo-Veľké Kapušany electrical connector. The project is to be completed on both sides by the end of 2028,” noted the Ukrainian Prime Minister.
“I welcome that our conversation confirmed that you are interested, like us, in ensuring that the transit system you have on Ukrainian territory continues to be used for both oil and gas. This is very important information for all of us,” added the Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico (Smer-SD).
According to the Ukrainian Prime Minister, both governments also discussed transport infrastructure. “We are making progress in adjusting the Užhorod-Vyšné Nemecké border crossing. It is partially upgraded. We are creating possibilities for its capacity to increase by 1000 vehicles,” informed Shmyhal.
The Ukrainian Prime Minister added that both neighboring countries are also cooperating in building the Kyiv-Košice railway lines, as well as in certifying train sets. (October 7)
