Nouakchott – The budget support agreement with Mauritania worth 100 million euros was signed by EU Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Síkela, who is visiting this West African country. Europe thus contributes to the stability and development of the African state, said the Czech eurocommissioner today on the network X. Sikela’s visit to Mauritania is his first foreign trip in office, which he assumed at the beginning of December.
The financial support will go to local development projects aimed at creating jobs, building key infrastructure and improving public services. According to Síkela, Mauritania met all the criteria necessary to receive this support, with this criteria focusing on national reforms, macroeconomic stability, public finances and transparency.
Sikela described Mauritania as a reliable partner, and cooperation with it will create new opportunities for European companies, he said. During his visit, he met on Wednesday and today with President Muhammad uld Ghazwani, the Prime Minister and ministers of energy, interior, foreign affairs, and economy and finance.
The Czech eurocommissioner is in charge of overseeing European international cooperation and development policy, supporting coordination between the European Union and its member states in the area of development cooperation. He also sponsors the Global Gateway investment initiative, with which the union wants to compete with China’s new Silk Road project. The EU plan envisages securing investments of up to 300 billion euros in infrastructure in developing countries, especially in Africa, India, Latin America and the Pacific in the coming years.
