Ljubljana – Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon hosted her Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan in Ljubljana today, with whom she signed a strategic partnership agreement between the two countries for the period up to 2026. They also discussed current global issues and agreed, among other things, that both countries will continue to strive for peace in the Middle East. Turkey remains a key partner of the EU and a candidate country for membership, the minister emphasized.
Fajon expressed satisfaction that Fidan also attended Thursday’s informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels. As she said, Slovenia supports the establishment of a mutually beneficial customs union between the EU and Turkey and the adoption of visa facilitation.
Fidan described the ministerial meeting in Brussels as very fruitful. He said they exchanged views on two main topics – relations between Turkey and EU institutions and possibilities for deepening cooperation. In light of Turkey’s potential full EU membership, he emphasized that for this to happen, there must be political will both in Brussels and Ankara.
In a discussion on current global issues, she and Fidan agreed that Turkey and Slovenia will continue to work towards ending the war in Gaza and a two-state solution. “In all diplomatic efforts, Slovenia is trying to gain an even greater number of countries to recognize Palestine,” Fajon emphasized.
They also talked about the future peace summit on Ukraine and agreed that it will be unsuccessful if representatives of Russia do not attend and if it is not supported by the countries of the global south. The head of Turkish diplomacy was also received by Prime Minister Robert Golob. (August 30)
