Brussels – Certain measures from the European Migration Pact, which will start to be applied in the summer of 2026, need to be implemented immediately, said Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob on the sidelines of the EU summit on Thursday. Regarding the return centers for rejected migrants outside the EU, which are supported by several members, he emphasized that they will not solve all issues related to migration.
Regardless of the pact, measures that can be taken need to be implemented immediately, said the Prime Minister. Among them is mainly action at the external borders or beyond them.
“Slovenia advocates that with the measures we will implement in transit countries, in the countries of origin, we do not wait for the migration pact, but that we start with them immediately and allocate more resources for this in the future,” the Prime Minister emphasized.
Golob also welcomed the search for new ways in the field of migration management. He believes that the return centers for rejected migrants to their countries of origin outside the EU will not solve all the issues related to migration.
In the discussion on the escalating situation in the Middle East, which the leaders already discussed on Wednesday with leading representatives of six Gulf states, the Slovenian Prime Minister advocated for an arms export embargo to Israel.
In Slovenia’s opinion, all measures that would lead to the halting of war conditions and military attacks by Israel both on Lebanon and Gaza should be adopted. Thus, it will support all international community measures aimed at calming the situation, said the Prime Minister. (October 16 and 17)
