Brussels/Ljubljana – Slovenia, like the vast majority of other EU member states, missed the deadline to submit the national energy and climate plan (NECP) to Brussels. The Slovenian government is expected to approve it only at the end of the summer. Only four member states have submitted their plans.
The Slovenian Ministry of Environment, Climate and Energy confirmed to the STA that the national plan has not yet been sent to Brussels. They explained that now every member state that has not yet done so must inform the Commission of where it stands in the process.
In Slovenia, the public consultation on the proposal for the amended draft update of the NECP ended in recent days, and comments are now being coordinated, the ministry said. The final version of the plan is expected to be approved by the government at the end of the summer.
The amended draft update, compared to the existing NECP, foresees an increase in the emission reduction target, namely by 55 percent instead of 36 percent compared to 2005. The EU-wide target is also 55 percent. The energy reduction target is more ambitious as well, aiming for 11 percent, which is also in line with EU goals.
In accordance with European legislation, member states had to submit updated energy and climate plans by the end of June, which need to be updated due to the EU’s more ambitious climate and environmental goals. These must also be reflected in national plans. By Sunday, only Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and the Netherlands had submitted their plans. (July 1)
