Ljubljana – The Slovenian government adopted the national plan for the implementation of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum on Thursday. The set of new rules at the European Union level for comprehensive migration management and strengthening the common European asylum system was adopted in May this year, and it will begin to be used in 2026.
The implementation of the pact will take place through ten substantive building blocks, identified in the EU’s joint implementation plan, the Slovenian Ministry of the Interior announced after the government session.
“Based on this and the gap analysis prepared by the European Commission for each member state, member states must prepare national implementation plans by December 12. In the gap analysis prepared at the end of September, the European Commission found that Slovenia has an effective migration and asylum management system in place, which provides a good basis for adapting to the new rules,” they added.
In the Slovenian plan, necessary measures are specified for each substantive building block, and a legislative framework for the implementation of the pact still needs to be adopted. The legislative proposal is already in preparation, and the legal framework must be adopted before June 2026.
The European Pact on Migration and Asylum was finally adopted by EU member states in May this year, after eight years of negotiations with the European Parliament. The legislation brings mandatory solidarity among members, faster and more efficient asylum procedures, and better border management. Slovenia is among the member states that have advocated for the pact to start being implemented before the summer of 2026, as planned. (December 5)
