Brussels – Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob supported a new mandate for the German politician Ursula von der Leyen as the head of the European Commission and the appointment of former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa as President of the European Council upon arriving for informal talks on leadership positions in EU institutions on Monday.
“Our experience with the President of the European Commission has been very positive. When Slovenia faced its toughest times, such as last year’s disastrous floods, she demonstrated not only understanding but also significantly contributed to us receiving ample financial support from Brussels,” Golob said regarding his support for Ursula von der Leyen.
He also supported former Portuguese Prime Minister Costa, who is the socialist candidate for President of the European Council. Regarding the corruption accusations that led to his resignation from the position of Portuguese Prime Minister late last year, Golob stated that Costa explained the matter to him in a recent conversation.
Although the Slovenian Prime Minister comes from liberal ranks, he is advocating for the Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas to become the new High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the union.
However, during Monday’s talks, the leaders of the member states did not reach an agreement on the distribution of leadership positions in EU institutions following the recent European elections. The outgoing President of the European Council Charles Michel expressed confidence that an agreement will be reached by the end of the month when the regular meeting will take place. (June 18)
