Brussels – The truce between the Israeli army and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in the Gaza area must hold, the Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon said before the EU-Israel Association Council meeting, which was also attended by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sar. She emphasized that Israel must also respect its part of the ceasefire agreement.
Forced relocation of Palestinians from Gaza to Jordan and Egypt, as proposed by American President Donald Trump, is also unacceptable, Fajon further stated.
“We will also emphasize the respect for human rights, international law, and humanitarian law,” she said.
In the morning discussion about the Middle East with colleagues from EU member states, she also stressed that a two-state solution is the only one that can ensure lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
The meeting of EU and Israeli representatives took place within the framework of the 2000 association agreement, which regulates trade relations between the parties. The second article of the agreement stipulates that relations between the contracting parties are based on the respect of human rights and democratic principles.
Spain and Ireland already called on the European Commission last February, in light of Israeli attacks on Gaza, to reconsider the agreement and take action if necessary. Slovenia also supported them in this. (February 24)
