Brussels – European Member of Parliament from the Slovenian ruling party Freedom Movement Irena Joveva was elected today as one of the eight vice-presidents of the liberal political group Renew in the upcoming European Parliament session. She announced that she would perform the duties of vice-president with full dedication for the common good of all EU citizens.
On Tuesday, the liberals re-elected the French politician Valerie Hayer as the group’s president, and today elected the vice-presidents. They chose the Irishman Billy Kelleher as the first vice-president, while the former journalist from Slovenia will be one of the remaining seven vice-presidents.
“It is an immense honor that my colleagues have shown such trust in me for a second term. I undertake this important role with pride and responsibility, aware of the challenges that await us in the new European Parliament term. I also interpret the voting outcome as recognition of my work so far,” said Joveva upon her election.
Regarding the support for Ursula von der Leyen for a new term as President of the European Commission, she stated that the Slovenian delegation in Renew is still reserved and that she and her colleague Marjan Šarec, who is also the Slovenian Defense Minister, are expecting additional explanations from the likely candidate.
The MEP from the ranks of the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) Matjaž Nemec, who is also a member of the Slovenian coalition party SD, meanwhile announced that he would not support von der Leyen. In his opinion, certain issues were not adequately addressed during her first term. (June 26)
