Ljubljana – Greenpeace Slovenia activists have called on Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon and Prime Minister Robert Golob to initiate the ratification process of the UN ocean agreement, which Slovenia signed last September. The foreign ministry explained in response that they are waiting for the completion of ratification by the EU.
As Greenpeace Slovenia’s Sara Kosirnik recalled, last March the UN adopted a historic ocean agreement after lengthy negotiations, in which countries agreed to protect the oceans for future generations for the benefit of the climate and life on the planet.
“To date, only nine countries have ratified it, and today we activists are here to remind our policy of this responsibility,” Kosirnik emphasized.
According to her, Slovenia, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, has a historic opportunity to show its ambitions in marine biodiversity protection and seize the opportunity to set an example for other countries.
The Foreign Ministry responded that at this moment the ratification of the agreement by the EU is in its final stage. After that, the ratification process in Slovenia is also planned. They intend to complete it before the end of the year. (July 9)
