Ljubljana – The leaders of the two largest Slovenian parliamentary parties, the liberal Freedom Movement Robert Golob and the center-right SDS Janez Janša, shared some views on European and domestic topics for the online portal N1 ahead of the upcoming European elections.
Janša emphasized that the upcoming European elections are important because the European Parliament actually co-decides in the EU. “Secondly, because the current direction needs to be corrected. And as the polls show, there will be a change in the right direction, namely in the direction of the foundations on which the EU was established,” he added.
Golob warned about right-wing populism, which “in reality is breaking Europe, because through blockades it denies it the right to exist, and I believe this will change.” As he said, he believes in the principle of solidarity and unity, in democracy, the rule of law, and integration.
The leader of the largest ruling party supports the abolition of decision-making by consensus on foreign and security policy in the EU Council, while the leader of the largest opposition party opposes this.
They also have different views on solving migration issues. Golob advocates for the legalization of migration flows, which means cooperation with countries of origin, while Janša would secure the border.
In the European elections on June 9, SDS and the Freedom Movement are expected to achieve first and second place respectively, according to public opinion polls. SDS is expected to win four parliamentary seats, while the Freedom Movement is expected to win two of the nine seats Slovenia will have in the next European Parliament.
