The Spanish Government’s Secretary of State for Justice, Manuel Olmedo, has advocated this Tuesday for the creation of a new category of eurocrime for hate crimes, especially in the realm of racism, xenophobia, and LGBTQphobia.
According to the Ministry of the Presidency, Justice, and Relations with the Courts, Olmedo expressed this during an informal meeting of Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs (JAI) of the European Union, held in Budapest under the Hungarian presidency.
During the meeting, they also deliberated about the role of Artificial Intelligence in Justice, which, according to Olmedo, can contribute to identifying and reporting hate speech and online discrimination.
Spain has defended the usefulness of Artificial Intelligence to strengthen the efficiency and accessibility of Justice systems and to ensure respect for fundamental rights, highlighting the need for its implementation to be carried out from parameters of ethics and transparency.
Olmedo presented Spain’s advances in the development and implementation of Artificial Intelligence-based technologies to improve the efficiency and accessibility of judicial services, in aspects such as document anonymization, document classification, automated summary of judicial documents, text transcription of recordings, automatic expungement of criminal records, or the easy reading system.
In the chapter related to judicial cooperation, he reiterated the necessity of consolidating the legislative instruments adopted in the criminal sphere in recent years, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, and the mutual recognition of judicial decisions. (July 23)
