Stockholm – Europe will give the USA a resolute response, promises Sweden’s Minister for Foreign Trade Benjamin Dousa after US President Donald Trump’s new tariff threats.
“Europe will not back down,” he says in a written statement to TT.
“We want more trade with the USA, not less. But if the USA is not interested in serious negotiations and instead chooses to escalate, they will face a resolute response from us,” says Benjamin Dousa.
He accuses the USA of escalating the situation when the EU wants to sit down at the negotiating table and says that the Swedish government will work “day and night” to ensure that the trade conflict with the USA has “as little impact on Swedish jobs and our economy as possible.”
Trump threatened on Friday to impose 50 percent tariffs on goods from the EU starting June 1, as discussions with the union “are going nowhere.”
