Stockholm – Many young people are arrested in the new wave of violence sweeping over Sweden.
The Swedish right-wing government wants to expedite a law that allows eavesdropping on children under 15 years of age.
“That we do not have control over the wave of violence is quite obvious,” says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
On average, an explosive attack has occurred daily during January. Therefore, the government held an extraordinary meeting with the national council against organized crime this week.
Kristersson describes the law as “absolutely central” to targeting those who order explosions and against the recruitment of children via social media.
“Social media platforms are evolving into recruitment sites for young people – quite openly, before they transition to encrypted chats,” he says.
He also issued a warning to social media platforms.
“Time and time again, we have appealed for more self-censorship and self-cleansing of the platforms. If this is not done, we will implement Swedish legislation against their ability to use the platforms in this way,” says Kristersson.
According to Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer, it is primarily about pushing for increased demands on the platforms within the EU.
The law was intended to take effect on July 1, 2026, but the target is now October 1, 2025.
