Budapest/Bratislava – Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Péter Szijjártó held a phone conversation on Tuesday with the Slovak Minister of Foreign Affairs Juraj Blanár about stopping the transit of natural gas through Ukraine. According to Szijjártó’s status published on Facebook, this was reported by the TASR correspondent in Budapest.
The Slovak government delegation was originally supposed to negotiate at the European Commission in Brussels on Tuesday, January 7, about stopping the transit of Russian gas. The postponed negotiations will eventually take place on Thursday, January 9, also in Brussels. The Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico (Smer-SD) and Minister of Economy Denisa Saková (Hlas-SD), together with representatives of the European Commission, will negotiate about stopping gas supplies to Slovakia.
According to the statement of the Hungarian foreign minister, Kyiv, although trying to join the European Union, with its new decision, as a candidate for membership, has once again put the European economy in a more complicated situation.
“This applies especially to Central Europe,” added Szijjártó, who discussed with Blanár the situation resulting from Ukraine’s decision not to renew the agreement with Gazprom on transporting Russian gas to Europe.
“We agreed that the association agreement between the EU and Ukraine should be respected by both parties and that this agreement also envisages the maintenance of energy transport routes,” emphasized the Hungarian minister.
On Wednesday, January 1, at 08:00 Moscow time (05:00 CET), the Russian gas company Gazprom stopped the supply of Russian gas through Ukraine to Europe and Moldova. It did so due to Ukraine’s failure to extend the transit agreement. (January 7)
